Joget Workshop

Our next event for the year the a dance workshop where you will be taught how to dance the Joget or Ronggeng. With the PPBNKLS hosting this year’s Baba Convention, we will like our home delegates to be prepared for this beloved dance during the Gala and Fellowship Dinners and all future events. The workshop will be led by a traditional dance coach Baba Barney Cheong from Melaka and will be held on:

• Date: Saturday, 16th March 2013
• Time: 10am to 12noon
• Venue: The Tranquerah, 62A-G, Red Carpet Avenue, Encorp Strand, Jalan PJU5/22, Kota Damansara, 47810, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
• Registration fee: Members RM30/pax and non-members RM40/pax.

Venue: National Textile Museum, Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur (opposite Dataran Merdeka and next to Dayabumi).

Mr. Norman Cho is a collector of Peranakan fabric, jewellery and porcelain and contributes articles regularly to the quarterly The Peranakan magazine issued by Peranakan Association of Singapore. He will be speaking about various ornaments worn by the Nyonyas and how you can select and collect Nyonya jewels as beginners. He will be sharing many personal photos and anecdotes of such jewels.

Participation fee:
RM20/head for members of PPBNKLS, MVM and Sahabat Tekstil
RM30/head for others.

Light refreshment will be served after the talk.

What a successful event! Despite the rain, the tents were filled with a many people who came to support and eat home cooked Peranakan food. It was so crowded, I had trouble finding a free table for my family. In the end, we shared a table meant for 4 with two other families!

Makan Makan Peranakan 9.12.12 (Saturday)

This is a celebration of our Peranakan community ‘s culinary heritage and gastronomic delights. If you love nyonya food, then pencil into your diary December 9 th 2012, where babas and nyonyas, nyonya chefs and cooks are volunteering to cook traditional and authentic nyonya fare for sale at our PPBNKLS ‘Makan Makan Peranakan’ event. All the dishes are traditional baba-nyonya food such as ayam pongteh, babi assam, kueh pie tee, ayam buah keluak, nyonya laksa, chicken curry, mee siam and curry kapitan. Nyonya kueh such as taibak, seri muka, kueh bengka, nyonya chang, rempah udang, pulut inti, bubur terigu, dodol will also be prepared for our special day.

Talk on ‘A Nyonya and her jewellery’ – a sharing session by Nyonya Lily Yew.
Date: Saturday, 11th August, 2012
Venue: The Saddle, Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club, Jalan Bukit Kiara, KL.
Time: 10.30am to 12.30pm

Nyonya Lily will share her stories and knowledge of Peranakan Nyonya jewellery in this session. She will give useful tips on how to take care of your jewellery, how to wear the kerosang, and what to look out for when purchasing or collecting nyonya jewellery. She will share with the audience photos of bejewelled nyonyas from her family album and examples of nyonya jewellery. Some items will be modeled by nyonyas for the audience to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of Nyonya jewellery.

Curriculum vitae of Mrs Lily Yew
Mrs Lily Yew nee Lim with ancestry from Anxi (AungKhoay) county, Fujian province, China is a Penang born and bred nyonya.  A mother of 2 and grandmother of 3, she is passionate about her nyonya heritage and culture especially kebayas, sarongs and jewellery.  She is a housewife turned businesswoman of nyonya kebayas with a website to keep the tradition alive. She inherited some family heirlooms and began collecting estate jewellery seriously during the last decade.  She would like to share her knowledge and observations so that others can benefit and treasure our priceless treasure

We are pleased to announce that our celebrity Nyonya Chef, Debbie Teoh will be spearheading  a team of chefs at the Park Royal Hotel KL during the Nyonya Food Promotion from 9th May to 10 June 2012.

Chef Debbie  will be holding a special Peranakan food cooking demo specially for PPBNKLS on:

Date:  Saturday 26th May, 2012
Time:  10 am to 12.30 noon
Dishes :  She will demonstrate the art of cooking  Ayam Kapitan, Otak-otak and Cendol.
The cooking demo will be followed by a buffet  – of delicious Nyonya and international food

This event is specially catered for PPBNKLS members and friends.  Fees are as follow:
Members – RM75 per head nett
Non-members – RM85 per head nett.
Reservations on first-come-first-served basis with full payment made into the Association’s account ie OCBC account no 707-108189-2 for ‘PPBNKLS (2008) if banking in,  or ‘PPBNKLS’  if doing an online transfer.

IT WAS a gathering of significance for the Peranakan Baba Nyonya Association Kuala Lumpur at their fifth Red Red Red Dinner and Dance.

The association established in 2008 has some 250 members, and continues to grow with more young people being part of the Peranakan community especially in the Klang Valley.

During the dinner, guests were entertained to music and comedy skits while the dance floor was opened for all the enjoy.

Apart from that, the guests also stood a chance in the lucky draw offering attractive prizes.

Having a good time: Some 200 guests attending the annual dinner and dance.

With the red theme taking centre stage, the ballroom of the Royal Selangor Club was filled with myriad shades of the colour as guests donned traditional Nyonya kebaya and dresses.

Association president Dr Lee Su Kim said the dinner was aimed at getting the community closer and better acquainted.

She said the response was great as about 200 people attended the event.

“We organise workshops, seminars and academic activities to promote the cultural aspect of the community.

“The culture is slowly phasing out especially with globalisation, so we want to preserve our heritage for the younger generation to know and remember their roots.

“It is a unique blend of Malay, Thai, European, Chinese, Javanese and Indian elements.

“Hopefully it will be passed on to the next generation,” she said.

Nyonya Debbie will be showcasing a mix of Penang and Melakan Nyonya cuisines i.e. Ju Hu Char, Pucok Kledek Masak Lemak, Pongteh Ayam and dessert Sagu Gula Melaka.  The main dishes go very well with steaming rice and sambal belacan.

Cut off date – Wednesday 14th March 2012.  Reservation accepted via full payment into Association’s account only.   Please note that we will be joined by members of the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club and the Malaysian Culture Society.  So kindly book early to avoid disappointment.

We are pleased to announce the first event for the year 2012 i.e. demonstration on the making of woven papaya chanap used by the Melakan Peranakans by an up-coming Peranakan culture enthusiast Baba Lee Yuen Thein.  You will be taught how to weave the papaya strip (using a ribbon for beginners) which you can later apply onto the papaya strips.

The event will be held as follows:
